Time Warp

It's getting dark outside. The blue sky is being replaced with gray shades of navy blue and streaks of white clouds. The sun had just set so the sky still has that orange hue with some leftover bright spots. It's warm in the car but you can feel the cold seeping in through the windows. As we pass little villages, people are all bundled up in their warm winter coats, hats and scarfs. Many are flocking towards the cemeteries to lay some flowers and light a candle on their loved ones' graves. Today is a day to remember those who are no longer with us and reminisce about them while they were among the living. To remember and smile about the good times past and silently say a prayer for their peaceful afterlife.

This morning us four ladies woke up and got ready to go and see our family members who aren't with us anymore and visit their resting places. It was a cold Thursday morning and we sleepily hudled into the car for the hour and a half ride. Armed with gira, the delicious soda made out of dark bread, some freshly baked buns and reading material. We picked up the little lady of our late grandfather and went to visit his grave as well as our grandmother's and other distant family members. It was a day of memories, togetherness and solemnity.

While walking out of the cemetery where both of my grandparents on my father's side rest, we ran into my grandmother Stefanija's sister. She was a darling little old lady.

After visiting the cemeteries we headed to our grandfather's farm. That place holds so many memories. Many happy summers were spent there; swimming in the pond, running around in the fields, playing with the animals, and slowly growing up. Going there was like stepping back in time. It was as if walking into a dream, one of many dreams which took place right there.

Being there was certainly bittersweet since the place itself brought back so many happy memories, sadly now though, it was only a ghost of what it used to be. The house was falling apart, the grass was overgrown, and things were broken and pillaged out of other structures on the compound. It was definitely sad to see this place so worn down and empty but it felt good to step foot on that land again.

The next day, us ladies went out to a club to get our groove on a little bit. I realized that I've actually never been to a club before in Lithuania so at the ripe old age of twenty-four, I got to experience the club in my home country. We drove to a nearby town of Šiauliai to a club called Pataya. How was it? We had fun and danced the evening away, however I was really disappointed to see how the guys of this country act and are. Honestly, I wasn't looking for a gentleman for myself since I already have my eye on someone quite extraordinary. But as a bystander, well, I was not pleasantly surprised. The guys were stuck up, classless, and just all around unimpressive. We had a great evening though. It was Halloween weekend too so some people were dressed in costumes and the whole club was decked out in creepy dolls and bloody writing on the walls. Also a popular singer Jazzu was performing later on that evening so it was cool.

The next day was all rain and no sun so we pretty much spent it all just hanging out inside, watching movies, catching up and looking at old photographs. It was a nice, lazy day.

These past few days have just been lovely all around. Reconnecting with my cousins was really nice. I was worried that we wouldn't get along or feel strange around each since it has been nearly ten years since we've seen each other, but it wasn't. It was nice, fun and comfortable. Hopefully now when I leave this time, we can stay in touch and keep up with each others lives. After all, family is so important. Those are the people that are supposed to stand by you and you can turn to anytime. That is one thing I've really missed while living in America. Hopefully I can hold on to the memories I make now to last me until the next time I am back here.

A quick visit to the past. The place where I spent every summer when I was a kid
and loved every minute of it. Oh how I miss those days...
