Days in Paradise
This place which I've been calling home since Friday afternoon is truly a little piece of heaven. It's surrounded by crystal blue Mediterranean Sea waters, impressive beaches and views that are truly breathtaking.
On Friday, I left the other place I called home for nearly three weeks. A little farm near Sineu where I worked and played with the array of animals happily roaming around. I do miss that place a lot and wish that the many great qualities of the farm, could be combined with the beauty and tranquility of the seaside, to make one beautiful, lovely place. Unfortunately, you can't have it all.
So I've moved on from one to the other. Missing the simplicity and the routine of the farm; early mornings meant feeding the animals first and then having breakfast. Playing with the dogs everyday and the love of all the animals, and then doing some things around the house and then getting my hands dirty with a project outside. The quiet evenings before dinner, sitting outside on the patio playing guitar, singing whatever comes to mind, playing whatever chords feel right. It was such a blessing to have the guitar there because having a lot of spare time, it pushed me to keep picking it up and becoming more and more comfortable with it. It was a good place and it was perfect for me. As much as I miss it now, I am wholeheartedly embracing the pure, natural beauty of my new environment. The awe inspiring views which surround Porto Cristo and the whole coast are something I wish I could share with everyone dear to me, friends and family alike. I wish I could show what I am seeing through my eyes, straight to their eyes. I wish you all could see and feel the serenity which the sea brings and the gratitude which I feel from having the opportunity to be here, so close to nature.
On this island, nature is only a step away, if you want it, it's here. Walking to the train station on Friday when I was leaving the farm, I ran into a family of quail scurrying along the road. Tiny little babies with the mother rushing ahead, trying to get her babies to safety. This morning, in Porto Cristo, walking the still very empty streets because it was Sunday and everyone was still slumbering after a late Saturday night. I was passing a small street with green and blue shutters, typical of these coastal towns and all of a sudden, fluffy bundles of joy wobbled across the street with their tired mother trailing behind. They were cute little puppies, happily running around in the morning sun! When they first saw me, they all ran but then as I stopped and sat down on the curb across from them, they stopped and watched me from afar. As I was coaxing then to come over, their curiosity took over and the bravest one slowly made his way to me. I played with him and tickled his belly as his little brother joined us soon after. The tired mother came over hesitantly after as well to see who was this person playing with her babies, I took my time and let her come to me as well. Soon she wandered over closer and plopped down heavily right next to me feet. The simple joy of animals. Irreplaceable. Perfect and pure...
As I continued my walk heading to the little secret cove with a small beach, the sun started to become warmer within minutes. I've been to this place before and there were only a few people there at any given time. Well, today was different, again for the same reason why the streets were empty earlier that day. That little secret cove was not so secret as there were numerous boats which anchored there throughout the day. Most not intruding, simply coming to enjoy the beauty of the place while others, loud with screaming children and noisy chatter. This was expected at any of the beaches today but now that Sunday is almost done, I look forward to a quieter week with less people.
On my walk to the cove, I took a few wrong turns as there are about ten splits in the road, left or right, left or right, demanding each time you come to a crossroads. By taking the wrong paths I ended up in a grown over path with sandals not being the best choice of footwear. I had already realized that the path I took wasn't the one I had to take but continued, sort of knowing but also hoping that it would lead to where I wanted to go. To my surprise, I encountered a wild turtle on my way, after which I found two more! They were so cute, just slowly crawling along the path, peaceful, undisturbed. I guess I disturbed and scared them a bit as that path isn't walked much at all but I continued on my path after looking at them for a bit and smiling to myself about how great nature can be. Three turtles later and a jungly walk there, I reached the beach and had a nice day of sun, swimming, reading and snoozing.
My mission tomorrow though is to walk up north along the coast and find a book store with a bigger selection of English books as the ones I found here were very limited and quite pricey. Tomorrow will be a walking day. Leave early, avoid the midday heat and find a good book (or two) to spend my upcoming days with. Oh by the way, the place where I am staying I found through Air BnB which was the first time I've used it. It turned out to be an excellent place with a lovely host! Besides being right in the center of Porto Cristo, with everything within a short walking distance, there is a lovely balcony with a view of the sea! Also when I moved in on Friday, Diego, the owner gave me a bigger room with ensuite bathroom even though I only had paid for a single room. Since no one else ha rented the bigger room, he said he was happy for me to take it as it is more comfortable. Also he was away this weekend so I had the whole place to myself, which has been really nice and relaxing. Even when he was here, it was nice and relaxing, ending my first night in the place, speaking and laughing with Diego. Me stretching my Spanish language skills and him politely helping me find the right words. It was nice. So once again, I got lucky with my choices of a place and people I'm staying with! :) lucky lucky duck
Besos y abrazos desde Porto Cristo, Mallorca! :)
