Dogs, pigs, cats, oranges and a whole lot of Time
My first full day on the island of Mallorca is proving to be just as slow as the last day when I was half asleep after sleeping on the floor of the airport. I ended up moving from the comfortbale bench outside to the floor inside as it got colder with each moment I laid there. Anyway, I've slept in worse situations while in Asia so now looking back, it wasn't that bad. Well, here I am, on this little island where Mallorcan is a whole other language and my knowledge of Spanish will not be improved since this language here sounds like a mix of Portuguese and funny Spanish. The little island where the concept of time gains a new meaning and the day stretches out incredibly due to the lack of everything having a time constriction, as things are in the cities...
I am staying at a little farm 2.5km away from a small town called Sineu. When I say little, I mean two little supermarkets and two main squares kind of little. However they did manage to have an unreasonably large amount of restaurants and cafes. Fair enough, there's not much to do here I guess besides sitting around and eating or drinking. So to stay with the local customs and because I already saw the whole town within thirty minutes, I am sitting down with a delightful cafe con leche (cafe aue lat in Mallorcan) in one of the two squares of Sineu. The wind picks up and it quickly becomes too cold to sit outside as it is a little before seven o'clock. I make my way back home, picking wild flowers and looking around at the different landscapes and animals that I pass by.
My hosts back at the farm or finca as they call it in Spain, are a lovely couple from UK, Pat and Bob. They are a nice combination of Spanish hospitality and British customs. Pat is intelligent, warm and easy going and Bob is silly, always cracking a joke and a kind person (from the few moments that I saw him). They live in a little Spanish style villa with a bit of land and a lot of animals! They have five dogs, four or five cats (not sure yet about the exact number!!!), three pot bellied Vietnamese pigs and three cute sheep. It's a full house :)
Bob works everyday and leaves early to go work on boats all over the island as he is a boat engineer. Pat stays at home as she works as an independent events manager which takes her all over the world and keeps her on her toes in terms of routine. Something that I need to find for myself!
In terms of work here, there are a few different projects that need to be done like painting and sorting through some things in the attic. However the daily responsibilities include feeding the dogs and the cats in the mornings, filling different water buckets for all the animals throughout the property and to also feed the chickens and collect eggs (if any). I forgot about the chickens, yes they are part of the Pat and Bob family :)
Oh and another wonderful thing is the fresh citrus trees! They have orange and lemon trees from which I've picked and eaten gloriously delicious and juicy fruit :) super nice bonus!
I have my own room with a private bathroom and also to my pleasant surprise, a guitar that I can play anytime! Not bad at all I say! :) however the only thing that I am finding hard here is the lack of other people. As lovely as Pat and Bob are, I am feeling a bit lonely, especially after coming from a full house in London and the ease and convenience of everything being nearby. It's definitely an adjustment. However, the warmer weather is certainly much appreciated and the love and joy of having happy, silly dogs around (and the other animals) is priceless.
Let's see what the next days bring :)
All of you back in the civilized world, read a newspaper for me and crack a smile while commuting to work :p
Much love from Mallorca xxx
