Up Up and Away!
I just found this old post which never actually posted on my blog so here it is :)
-Robin Sharma from The Monk Who Sold His Ferrari
I am starting with a quote from Robin Sharma's book because after reading just a few chapters everyday, I rediscovered quite a few ways to make my life and the life of those around me, more meaningful and selfless. It's a great read and an easy book to pick up at any time.
Out of the books and into the real world. The island has been pretty calm. After all the recent events, I was worried coming back to the place I call home. Upon my return I was pleasantly surprised with high spirits and positivity all around. It was excellent and so reassuring.
The island now appeared even more beautiful and precious than before.
Somehow things tend to be easily forgotten here. A sort of out sight, out of mind mentality. I guess it's good, people can move on and nothing lingers on. All the bad things eventually turn into a memory, it stays in the past, only intruding our daily lives very rarely, if ever.
To do my own version of moving on, cleansing and to pay tribute as well, I did the Long Beach jungle trek first time since the incident. It felt right and I was ready to move on.
On a beautiful Wednesday morning last week, I headed out for the day to Long Beach. I've done that trek quite a few times but I've never actually been to the end of the 7K beach. With my backpack on and determined heart I set out to find the village, on the stopping to check on my old creation. My old camping spot from a few weeks ago where I built a shelter out of bamboo, rope and trash found on the beach. Unfortunately there's a lot of it there, but when building a shelter, that beach is a hidden gem for that.
This was the tent after a storm and a week of being left unattended.
My teepee turned out to not be waterproof last time and when the heavy rain came in the middle of the night, I was forced to move and seek shelter. It was very fun to walk by there and see how it held up. The walk down the beach was absolutely stunning. The water was a vibrant blue and the palm trees were swaying in the wind, who was softly whistling down the beach. The feeling of walking down that beach is amazing. The world is at your feet when you are there. It's just you and nature.
People think they're powerful, smart and capable but standing in the middle of a massive stretch of white sand or a thunderous sea, makes you realize how small you really are and that we are all just a part of a bigger picture, a bigger story. Once we understand that, the small worries don't seem to matter as much and this world becomes a playground versus a purgatory.
We are all capable of different things, we have different talents and abilities, but in the end we all are searching for the same thing. Happiness. Everyone wants to be happy. And the craziest thing is that the possibility of happiness lies inside every one of us but we make our own paths which a lot of times lead to a dead.
We need to push ourselves, push our boundaries. Set goals, be passionate, but don't worry about the factors in your life that are out of your hands. If something is stressful and it's something that is out of your hands, let it go. Let it be. The universe tends to work things out naturally, on its own. Like a powerful river flowing down a mountain stream, we should also not fight the currents but bend and curve with them in hopes of slowing down somewhere nice, somewhere beautiful.
My walk down the beach took me by some beautiful sand dunes, lonely homes looming in the distance surrounded by a jungle, and eventually to the Sok Sam village at the end. It was really great to see another village for the first time since being on the island. I almost felt like I was somewhere and not on the same island that I've made my home.
This island is still so pure and there are so many unexplored areas that Koh Rong is truly a playground just waiting to be enjoyed.
Now, let's go play ;)
