Shipping off to the islands!

Man, I forgot how crazy driving in Thailand is. This morning I got picked up by a minivan from Pineapple Guesthouse, the place I was staying near Phuket, Karon Beach. The destination today is Koh Lanta (Lanta Island) off the coast of Krabi town. When I woke up this morning it started raining which was completely ok with me since I'll spend most of the daylight time commuting. Now I am just sitting in the minivan taking me to Phuket town, enjoying the views passing me by. I already came on this road, on the way in from the airport, but it was nighttime so I didn't see much besides lights and restaurants. I was watching a large industrial truck stacked with about thirty five people, pass us by as if we were going slow. We weren't. At all. As it rounded the corner I thought, "That's a bit dangerous... Welcome back to Thailand though". We continued down winding roads, seeing the Andaman sea peak out from out of all the jungle like vegetation. About ten minutes l...

My new Thai mother (sorry mum!) :)

The couple days I spent in Karon beach were nice and relaxing. With one rainy day and two days of sunshine. Although I've definitely been on much nicer beaches, this one was only a couple minutes walk away from the guesthouse and had enough white sand to lay down on. It was a bit dirty though, most likely because of the really strong currents and huge waves which seemed to take over the beach later on in the day, also washing up all the rubbish that people unfortunately throw out in the sea. Nonetheless, I had a couple of nice days at the beach, just lounging around, taking some naps in between reading a Nicholas Sparks novel that I found at the hostel. I ended up leaving one of my books there and swapped it for the cute little romance novel. I was craving to read one. Since my last read was Shantaram, I was in the mood for something I know I'll enjoy. That is definitely true of Nicholas Sparks' writing. His books have always been a pleasure to read. So besides lots of wa...

Touring Singapore in style ;)

Image
A kick scooter tour of Singapore. Never thought I'd be doing that. It was sure the best way to spend my last night in Singapore. In the company of wonderful people from The InnCrowd Hostel, while seeing the city in a way that only a few have a chance to.   In front of the Golden Mosque The tour started at 5:30pm and consisted of eight tourists including myself and one guide from InnCrowd. We didn't get back to the hostel til after 10pm so it was a fun filled and very active evening. Since I sent my shoes home last time I was shipping things in Malaysia, all I had for footwear were my old, worn out flip flops. When I wear them, my toe walks on the ground and not on the shoe itself. Anyway, I don't mind them because they've travelled the world with me, you know, they have history. I know, I know, it's only a rubber shoe but still. So getting back to the story, flip flops are not a good choice of footwear while kicking around with a scooter. Lu...

Singapore Zoo

Visiting the Singapore Zoo was so much fun! I saw some animals that I've never even heard of and the fact that a lot of them roam free (only the smaller ones) is pretty impressive. Here are some photos and a cute video from the zoo :)A nice

Eating a Snake in Vietnam

Image
So this is going way back into my journey but I wanted to share this video with you guys who have not seen this yet. This was made in the outskirts of Hanoi, Vietnam at a little restaurant who specialised in none other but SNAKES. Before I even left home, I watched a short clip from National Geographic about the strength and the power people supposedly acquire after eating a snakes heart and drinking its blood. So me being me, curious and may I say fearless sometimes, I was determined to do that once I got to Vietnam. So here is the evidence :)

Open up your heart

"Every act of suffering, no matter how small or agonizingly great, is a test of love in some way." -Shantaram We, as humans, go through many trials and tribulations throughout our lives and that journey never seems to stop. It's a continuous road of discovery, disappointment, realization, suffering, love, hate, desire, passion, heartache, regret... Hopefully not too much regret but instead, lessons learned which hopefully lead to a more fulfilling future. But we don't know. We're only human after all. Animals. Cats and dogs. Fighting and getting along, compromising while attempting to happily coexist and actually enjoy our time here on earth while we can. Nothing in this life is guaranteed. That is why we must follow our instincts and listen to our hearts. As crazy as they might seem sometimes. Just like our bodies know what we need when we are getting sick; we feel cold, we shiver, so we put on a layer of clothes to keep our temperature at a warm, comfortab...

The kindness of the Heart

While wandering the historic streets of Melaka, I got invited to my second open house, celebrating the Hari Raya, the end of Ramadan. Although this open house was completely random, it was just as delightful and full of very nice people. My first open house was at Syida's parents' home in Kota Kinabalu. It was a lovely afternoon spent with her immediate family as well as some close friends and neighbors. The food was absolutely delicious and her family received me as if I was a part of it. What else could I have asked for! This recent open house was hosted by the locals of Melaka as well as the governor. I went up the hill near the Town Square because I heard distance sounds of fun traditional Malay music playing there. As I got closer and was about to walk by completely, a group of young Malays dressed in full headdresses and silk gowns, dragged me inside and offered me all kinds of delights. From chicken and beef satay, to many different kinds of curry. And an array of mout...
